What is Salsa?

A very famous television celebrity, Oprah Winfrey, once said, “Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance”.  Around the world, dancing is an activity that people do for entertainment, exercise, mental relief, and emotional joy.  Many people just enjoy the pure happiness of dancing around to music. Dancing, in many ways, gives individual people a chance to express who they are and how they feel at a particular moment in time.

There are so many different types of dances.  For example, there is the Rumba, the Waltz, the Tango, the Cha-Cha-Cha, the Quickstep, and The Jive.  One dance, in particular, is famous for making people feel alive, vibrant, and sexy.  This dance is called the Salsa.

Most people say that the Salsa dance originated in Cuba.  The dance was accompanied with the fast-paced, rhythmic sounds of Cuban musicians.  The term, “Salsa”, originated in America, in the early 1900’s.  It was meant to describe the new music and movements that appeared upbeat, rhythmic, and somewhat sensual.  The Salsa movement was brought to the United States after American soldiers witnessed the dancing and music during the Cuban War of 1898.

Throughout the 1900’s, the Salsa dance grew in popularity in the United States, and in several Caribbean Islands.  Many musicians created new music that complimented the dance moves of the Salsa moves.  The height of the Salsa popularity in the United States was around the 1970’s and 1980’s.   During that time, the dance was widely spread around the U.S., with many different styles emerging, based on location.  For example, people in Miami, Los Angeles, or New York would add their own flare and style to the same dance.  Most American Salsa dancers aimed at being more spirited than the original form of the dance.  They added moves such as aerial and acrobatic moves, and more complicated twists and turns.

Salsa has, once again, become a popular dance with the creation of reality television shows, such as Dancing With The Stars.  Many people have been inspired by the celebrities’ exhibitions on the show, that they also wanted to learn the dance.  YouTube is another outlet where people can learn the Salsa dance moves.  There are many instructive videos and exhibition videos available for people to learn new tricks.  In addition, individuals can learn solo Salsa moves, which allow them to enjoy the rhythm and dance moves alone, without a partner.  The Salsa provides people with an opportunity to express themselves as sensual, energetic, athletic individuals.

If Salsa sounds like it may be of interest to you, then find some good, spicy music and let your body begin to move with the rhythmic sounds.  Perhaps there is a future for you to learn the Salsa and help keep the dance alive for many generations yet to come.
