Feel the Electricity!

Dancing is one of the best forms of physical activity a person can do in order to improve their well-being.  Along with the obvious physical benefits such as strength, endurance, cardiovascular health, and weight control; there are also mental, emotional, and social benefits.  For these reasons, dancing has survived many, many generations of longevity, as one of the most important forms of exercise.

One dance that is particularly good for one’s well-being is the Salsa.  Salsa dancing is, usually, a very fast paced, energetic, intense dance.  It is a dance that is most often performed with a partner; however, there are many moves one can do to practice the Salsa completely alone.  For those who don’t always want the fast pace of the traditional Salsa, there are also Salsa dances that are slow, romantic, and rhythmic.  The Salsa can be as simple or as complicated as one desires.  This will usually depend on the speed and the variety of moves in a particular dance.  Anyone can do the Salsa, even the uncoordinated electrician in Birmingham, AL, who doesn’t think he can do the dance.  The only requirements are interest, zest, and ability to move.

The Salsa is a dance that is focused on the movement of the hips.  Generally speaking, the upper body moves very little, while the hips move diagonally, or back and forth.  Weight changes, or shifts, allow the hips to move.  With practice, upper body movements can also be incorporated.  If dancing as a couple, the dancer in charge will usually use his arms to signal when certain changes are about to occur.  Many, many techniques can also be incorporated into the Salsa dance as one becomes more adept.  Some of these variations may include body rolls, shimmies, spins, and foot placement.  The footwork can be from the simple to the complex.

The mental and emotional benefits of Salsa dancing are quite uplifting.  The Salsa is known to be a romantic, sensual, vibrant dance; therefore, when a person dances the Salsa, they feel more like a sensual and vibrant person than with other dances.  With the right kind of music, one can blossom with a liberty and confidence, perhaps unknown even to themselves.  This can do much for one’s self-esteem and ability to reduce stress.

Salsa dancing can also provide new social outlets for people.  Since the Salsa dance is usually performed as a couple’s dance, there are opportunities to engage in dance with your life partner, a friend, or with someone you meet at a dance club.

There are so many benefits to Salsa dancing.  There are physical benefits, of course.  Perhaps one of the most exciting benefits is the fact that you can shed a lot of your inhibitions as you engage in this romantic, flowing, beautiful dance.
